Anatolian Shepherd Dogs

Hi, My name is Maureen Charnstrom and together with my husband John we own and breed the Anatolian Shepherd Dog under the Kennel Name of "Cappadocia".  We are situated just north of Adelaide, in South Australia, where we have a small acreage with our beloved dogs, Goats, Sheep, Emus, Australian Wildlfe and our Red Deer 'Benz'.
This page is dedicated to these amazing dogs, and hopefully by the end of reading all about them and following the links, you also may come to admire and respect their role in life.
I am not going to go into the history of the Anatolian, as their are many links pointing in this direction, and I am sure you will follow the signs for further reading if you are captivated by our dogs.
ALL our dogs are Hip Scored  - We only breed from good quality stock and temperament.
This page is just about 'Our  Anatolians' so let us  begin our journey .........

"KHAN"
Ch. Siviri. Bakici Erkan
18.12.1993
Height 75cm   - 29.5ins
Weight 55 kg     - 120 lbs
It had taken some research, and a lot of dog searching to find the 'right dog' for  our needs. A move from the  city back to the country meant that the pretty but comical Afghan Hound, was not going to be suitable,  and the more outgoing  Rottweiller or Doberman was not going to be accepted by local sheep farmers.  Our rescue work with Australian Wildlife also meant that we had to have a dog, that accepted 'everything' on our property as his charges, and that he/she would treat them as equals.
Eventually our descicion became easy, and we found 'Khan' the dog of our dreams.  Never having seen an Anatolian before except in a book, we were amazed at the size, strength, yet gentleness of this giant rough coated puppy.  Because of our isolation Khan was never a 'paddock' dog,  but instead became my body guard. We were inseperable from the beginning, obedience training, and shows.  He earned his Aus. Champion title one week after his first birthday. In 1995 - Challenge Dog, and Best of Breed at the Royal Adelaide Show.
Khan  sired one litter of puppies, but  an unfortunate incident caused his personality to change, and he now spends most of him time in the company of the paddock dogs, and caring for the orphaned handraised lambs and goats.

"HUSH"
   Ch. Nivri Shushtah
29.7.1992
Height 69.6cm  - 27ins
Weight 45kg     - 99 lbs
Hush was purchased originally as a companion to Khan, and the two of them kept intruders at bay,  also watching  carefully over the incubator and hatchery.   On more than one occasion we were saved from intruders and trespassers, all because two wonderful dogs were protecting their 'own'.  Hush also joined Khan on shows, and was also titled to Aus. Champion  a week after him.  She took Challenge Bitch and Runner up Best of Breed at the Royal Adelaide Show in 1995, just behind her mate.
Hush has a wonderful temperament, and  it was for this reason that we bred from her. She produces wonderful healthy puppies, some going on to be Champions, others exports to Overseas countries as working and show dogs.
Hush has always enjoyed seeing her 'family' regularly, and so we hold a annual Chritmas party for her local offspring.
She has just produced her last litter of healthy puppies on 23rd March 1999, andd will from now on spend her days lazing in the sun, greeting people at the gate, or having her belly rubbed..........................

                    " "ELLIE"
Cappadocia Gusel Asamet
6 - 1- 1995
Height 69.5cm   - 27ins
  Weight 41 kg -   90 lbs
Ellie was the result of Hush's first litter with  us - sire - Ransu Asker. She is a rough coat, paddock dog, with the occasional  show in her first year.  She was Reserve Challeng Bitch to her mother in 1995 at the Royal Adelaide Show.  She never liked the limelight of the  show, and the long days made her restless  to get back to her charges, so we never pursued her 'beauty' career.  Ellie lives permanently with sheep, and has earned quite a name for herself in the local area.  During the year 1997 Ellie killed 13 foxes on not only our property but surrounding farms.  She is a restless dog, that thinks ALL the sheep in  the area are hers to look after.  She is now confined to a smaller paddock with electric fences, so she cannot escape. The first year of her inprisonment a nearby farmer asked where 'his' dog was, as he had already lost 40 plus lambs to foxes.  He stated with pride, that when 'the lil girl' was around we didn't lose any.  As much as this makes us proud, we are not prepared to have her roam the countryside, playing good samaritan and midwife.
Ellie is a wonderful natured dog, has had one litter of puppies which have all been an exceptional size and wonderful nature. Some of that litter have gone to South Africa as working dogs.  Zeka, can be seen at South African Lind below.

"Bubba"
Coban Kopegi Babyani
Height 82.5cm -  32.5ins
Weight 60kg   - 132lb
Bubba is shared owned by myself and Cathy Radcliffe.  He is rather a lucky dog, in that he has a shared life between the both of us.  During his long stays with us, he lives permanently with Emu,
and on alternate weekends stays with Cathy in the city, with her dogs, goes to the dog shows, and sleeps on a 'bed'. Has even been seen in Sydney Airport after jetsetting off for his annual holiday.
Bubba is nearly titled, but time  and ill health does not permit dog shows for the time being. He was Challenge Dog, and Best of Breed at the Royal Adelaide Show in  1998.
When at home, Bubba is devoted to his stock.  He is an exceptionally patient dog, putting up with much from the Emu.
When the grandchildren visit, of course Bubba is on the visit list, and he loves to come inside to 'cradle' the new baby.

"Nala"
Arkadas Eda
Height 71 cm  - 28 ins
Weight 43 kg  - 94.5lb
Nala is now a registered 'Kangal' Dog.  She has been with goats since age 8 weeks, only coming out to go to a few shows.  Even though we think Nala is a wonderful specimen of a dog, the judges don't agree with our view. LOL  So her show days were short lived, much to her delight.  She is a devoted charge, and as yet has not had to  prove her skills against anything other than a visiting peacock.  Even though she killed this large bird, she did not attempt to eat it, but rather left it, not letting her goats near the "prey".
We unfortunately lost a couple of  her goats, due to poisoning, and Nala would not leave their side, and built shelters around them "to keep them protected!!!"  "Warm"!!! but for whatever reason, she stayed with them until we could help her.  She frets when something of her's dies, and is mournful for a few days.  Nala also likes to dig craters and caves for her goats to give them somewhere to escape the weather.  She is truly an amazing dog, and I could talk for hours on her antics.

"Jag"
Cappadocia Demeleon
27.2.1998
Height 81.5cm  -  32 ins
Weight 52kg     - 122lb

"Yamba"
Cotelli..........
Yamba came to us late 1998, from a rather distratrous situation.  She was rescued along with 2 other bitches: ' Hilly & Zimmie'. Yamba has taken a long time to settle, but is a wonderful gentle creature, devoted beyond belief to us her new family.  She has just produced a healthy  litter of unexpected puppies after  visiting  the 'Bubba'.  She has become a house dog and companion to Hush.  We do not intend to show Yamba as  we feel it would be too traumatic for her, but instead we are doing obedience training, where she seems so willing to please.

"Grandpuppies"
Like all devoted Grandparents, we cannot let go by without the 'brag' album.
so here is some of the grandpuppies from Hush, Ellie and Yamba.

The following photos are from a Hush and Khan litter.  She produced  7 sons, no daughters.

'Caleb'  owned by Cathy Radcliffe,  was the runt of the litter.  As you can see he certainly turned out  a magnificent dog, not only in looks but in manner.  Cathy does off lead obedience training with him.

'Cody'  owned by Gloria Gromball.   Has always been a poser ever since he was a puppy.  But then having a photo happy mum helps!

'Simba' owned and adored by  the Creighead family. Simba is also off lead trained, and is strictly a  couch potato!

'Ben'  owned by David Masterson. Ben was a water baby from the beginning.
